The extraordinary true story of the weka of lake Whakatipu

Moving to Aotearoa New Zealand opened a whole new world of inspirations for me. I couldn’t help but wrote a full story about the little island near my new home, and all those fantastical birds that were new to me. Writing and illustrating this story, full of local faces and landscapes, was like a way to say thank you for accepting me here. This book was illustrated in full with watercolor and colored pencils.

REVIEWS

Kay Benseman, The Slapping | Ruby Loud Mouse and the Ruru

[…] Dïne the Fox, illustrates the story with a restrained palette but obvious care and skill. My tamariki especially enjoyed the Aotearoa-specific elements throughout and I loved how energy and surprise were communicated, as well as sweet details of blushing cheeks in whakamā. Te reo Māori is naturally incorporated as needed within the text and there’s cool information at the back about mice and ruru. […]

What book next | Ruby Loud Mouse and the Ruru

What a gorgeous story! […] Ruby the Loud Mouse and the Ruruwill make a great read aloud for 4+, and a wonderful way for new readers to flex their reading skills. This picture book by NZ Author, Alice Pearce and NZ Tattoo Artist and Illustrator, Dïne the Fox also has interesting facts about both Mice and Ruru (Morepork) in the rear of the book, along with links to research further facts.

Dïne’s exquisite illustrations demonstrate so beautifully how images can transform a book into something even more special. The visual “rhyme” produces comfort and provokes interest. There is both action and movement, and the characters are so appealing.

_ Paula Green, Poetry Box | Uppish Hen & other poems

Dïne’s illustrations match [the poems] nicely, with a palette of orange, soft greens and pinks, muted blues. Her images echo moods, reward with details: a hedgehog with a leafy umbrella; a centrifugal swirl of bulbs, lanterns, branches; a glimpse of glowing subterranean houses. They’ll delight multiple generations.

Inspired by the magic of nature, I create colorful illustrations with a poetic touch. I like to add an inclusive spirit to everything I do.

Established as an illustrator in France from 2015, I now work from the middle of the mountains, in the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, since 2017.

I am as excited by a children’s book project than a graphic novel one. I love to read picture books myself (using my son as an excuse to buy lots of them) as well as middle grades/young adult graphic novels. I try to write books that I would like to read, and I believe that a good story can always move someone, somewhere.

I love working with traditional mediums such as graphite, watercolor, ink, and gouache. I also create digitally on Procreate or Photoshop with a textured, handmade feel. All my work, even digital, is made without generative AI.

Some of the artists I admire include Carson Ellis, Cyril Pedrosa, Júlia Sardà, Jon Klassen, and Rébecca Dautremer. At home, I’m a big reader of N. J. Stevenson, have all the printed editions of Heartstopper, adore Lightfall, and rewatch The Lord of the Rings regularly. I also share the Hilda books and tv shows with my five-year-old. Together we invent anthropomorphic characters, teapot houses, and stories about talking birds.

I started tattooing in 2018 and you can see my work HERE.
My work as an illustrator inspires my work as a tattoo artist, and vice versa.

In 2021 I won the Merit award at the Ray White Arrowtown Exhibition for the illustrations of my children’s book “the extraordinary true story of the wekas of lake Whakatipu”.
